Scholarly books
The Awards to Scholarly Publications Program is designed to assist with the publication of scholarly books on topics in the humanities and social sciences.
Scholarly books are extended academic texts that display sound scholarship and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and research.
Benefits of consulting a publisher
While authors are free to apply directly to the ASPP, many authors find it helpful to prepare their application with a publisher eligible to work with the ASPP. Publishers can help ensure that a work is ready for submission to the ASPP, since it is a highly competitive program.
Publishers are also able to gather peer review reports on the work that can be used for the ASPP application. For applications submitted by authors, the ASPP undertakes the peer review process.
The peer review process is necessarily lengthy. The ASPP cannot guarantee that its peer review will be completed within any specific time frame.
Since ASPP funded works must be published by an eligible publisher, authors often find it reassuring to know that one of those publishers is already interested in publishing their work before investing the time and effort required to complete the ASPP application process.

Publication Grant
Each year, the ASPP offers up to 180 Publication Grants to support the publication of scholarly books.
An ASPP Publication Grant provides $8,000 to offset the cost of publication. Grants are approved in principle prior to publication and are paid following publication directly to the publisher.

Translation Grant
Each year, the ASPP offers up to five Translation Grants to support translations of scholarly books.
An ASPP Translation Grant provides $12,000 to offset the cost of translation and publication. Grants are approved in principle prior to publication of the translation and are paid following publication directly to the publisher.

Submitting an application
There is no deadline to apply. Applications are accepted and evaluated throughout the year.
Applications may be submitted by regular mail or by email; coordinates can be found at the end of the application form. The preferred file format for email submissions is PDF.
If you are not able to send all the required documents by email, please submit your application by regular mail. Applications must be complete at the time of submission. The ASPP reserves the right to return incomplete applications.
Peer review and conflict-of-interest
All works submitted to the ASPP undergo a rigorous peer review process during which at least two peer reviewers provide detailed reports.
To ensure an unbiased evaluation, the peer reviewers must conform to the ASPP’s conflict-of-interest guidelines (pdf).

If your work is awarded an ASPP grant, the following acknowledgement must appear in the introduction, preface, acknowledgements or on the copyright page
