Together from the start: Federation and the ASPP

Jessica Clark and Matthew McKean, Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences

The ASPP (Awards to Scholarly Publications Program) has been, in one incarnation or another, at the heart of the Federation since day one. The competitive funding program, designed to assist with the publication of scholarly books on topics in the humanities and social sciences, has supported over 6000 books since it began.

In 1940, the Aid for Publication program was established, thanks to a $5000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. The goal was to ensure that completed works by “competent scholars” did not go unpublished. In the early days, Aid for Publication funding supported scholarly books recommended by the Canadian...

Remembering the 1885 Resistance 130 Years Later

Michel Hogue, Carleton University

The Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP) funded the recent publication of Michel Hogue’s book Metis and the Medicine Line: Creating a Border and Dividing a People (University of Regina Press). The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences invited Professor Hogue to share his reflections on the 130th anniversary of the North-West Resistance.

Ride "swift-safe in the night, ride without rest," writes poet Marilyn Dumont, urging Metis leader Gabriel Dumont to flee as Canadian troops close in on the Metis at Batoche in May 1885. She...

ASPP-Funded Books Dominate The Hill Times’ Best of 2014 List

Jessica Clark, Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences

On Monday, The Hill Times published its annual list of “Best 100 Books” from the past year. As usual, books funded by the Federation’s Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP) were well represented. In fact, 23 of the 100 books – almost a quarter of the list! – were supported by the ASPP.

As you might imagine, we’re absolutely chuffed that so many of the political science books we’ve supported have been recognized by The Hill Times in this way. The Federation sends a hearty “congratulations” to all the authors and publishers of these great books! Here is the list of the ASPP books that made the cut:

Open Access and the Humanities, by Martin Paul Eve

Nour Aoude, Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences

When it comes to open access, it can sometimes feel like the humanities and social sciences are merely catching up to the progress made in science, technology and engineering disciplines. One of our goals at the Federation is to encourage the publishing of SSH monographs in open access. So naturally, we are very excited about the recent publication of Open Access and the Humanities: Contexts, Controversies and the Future (Cambridge University Press) by author...

The ASPP en vedette at the Salon du livre de Montréal

Jessica Clark, Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences

Last Friday, it was my privilege once again to attend the Salon du livre de Montréal on behalf of the Federation and the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP). The Salon is a paradise for book nerds of all persuasions, this girl included! As always, I enjoyed soaking in the bright colours of the booths, mountains of gorgeous books, and the frisson of energy that permeates the hall. After a little browsing I turned my attention to my main purpose for attending the Salon this year.

We were very fortunate to have arranged...

Parcours numériques : Le futur du livre et l’accès libre (French)

Marcello Vitali-Rosati and Michael E. Sinatra, Université de Montréal
