About child care at Congress
The Federation actively supports access and equity, particularly for Congress. We take active steps in areas where we can exercise full control. We offer students, retired and unwaged participants significantly reduced registration fees to encourage and facilitate their participation. Over the years there has been a growing diversification of delegates. We take our commitment to equity and diversity very seriously, and work diligently to ensure that delegates of all backgrounds can access services at Congress.
We recognize that access to childcare services in many parts of the country is a difficult proposition at the best of times. The Federation’s approach regarding childcare services at Congress is to work through the host university. Embedded in their own communities, host institutions are better positioned to assess service supply and evaluate appropriate possibilities. Facilities and services differ greatly in each community, and it is difficult to determine the demand in advance. In addition, the needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and pre-teens are very different, which makes it all the more challenging for the host university to try to meet childcare preferences of Congress attendees.
Congress circumstances change every year. Providing real access to daycare services has been particularly challenging. Our Board will review our approach and policy about childcare. It will consider options and work to ensure there is clarity on this issue for the future.
